The presence of cockroaches, especially American or German cockroaches, emerging from floor drains, bathtubs, or sinks is a critical sign that your plumbing system has a direct connection to the deep sewer.
Dry pipes (without a water seal) or those covered in thick biofilm provide a protected, nutrient-rich "highway" for these pests to invade your home from the sewers.
⚠️ The Real Danger: Cockroaches are formidable disease vectors. Scientific studies show they carry Salmonella, E. coli, Shigella, and other enteric pathogens both on their exoskeleton and inside their gut. They transmit diseases through three mechanisms: direct contact (contaminated legs touching surfaces), regurgitation of partially digested food, and defecation on utensils and food. Cockroaches practice coprophagy (eating feces) and necrophagy (eating carcasses), which exponentially amplifies the bacterial load they carry.
If a cockroach is coming out of your drain, it means there's an entire colony living in your pipes, feeding on bacterial biofilm and transporting fecal pathogens directly from the sewer to your kitchen and bathroom.
